Qualified accountants and CPAs are trained to assist you with the management of your financial transactions, help you with your business and or personal taxes, and record-keeping tasks, among other things. Training Requirements:
According to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), most Accountants are required to hold at the minimum a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Some accounting firms prefer their applicants also hold a master's degree in accounting or in business administration with a concentration in accounting.

Licensure and certification:
* Any accountant filing a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is required by law to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). CPAs are licensed by their State Board of Accountancy and those accountants who pass a national exam and meet other requirements of the State where they practice can become a CPA.

* As of 2007, 42 states and the District of Columbia require CPA candidates to complete a minimum of150 semester hours of college coursework, which is an additional 30 hours beyond the usual 4-year bachelor's degree.

* All 50 states and the District of Columbia use what is called the four-part Uniform CPA Examination prepared AICPA. This is a rigorous exam and, statistics show that only about half of the applicants who take it each year will pass all portions in their first try.

* Nearly all states now require all licensed CPAs and other public accountants to complete a certain number of hours of continuing professional education before their licenses can be renewed.
